Propane Safety Training - Use of Construction Heaters and Torches up to 400,000 BTUH

This Canadian Propane Association (CPA) is the authority in providing the resources to ensure that workers operating with propane do so safely across all provincial jurisdictions.  The Propane Training Institute (PTI) designed this course for individuals who use propane powered construction heaters (up to 400,000 BTUH) and hand-held torches. It is delivered by a certified PTI trainer through Act First Safety. This training is required for anyone connecting, activating or disconnecting propane devices of this type (400,000 BTUH or less).

Learning Objective

The participant will gain knowledge in the following key areas:

Product Knowledge

Includes instruction on the properties and characteristics of propane; personal protective equipment required; preventative measures, and first aid tips specific to propane; and understanding sources of ignition and testing for leaks.

Propane Cylinders

Participants gain an understanding of the various types and sizes of propane cylinders; receiving and storage of cylinders at the construction site; transporting cylinders around the construction site; and regulatory requirements of cylinder use.

Construction Heaters and Equipment

Includes instruction on the roles and responsibilities of construction heater users and rental companies; types of construction heaters; rules of the safe use of construction heaters; electrical requirements, combustion and ventilation; propane torches; hoses, fittings and regulators.
A Canadian Propane Association Participant Manual is provided.

Regulatory References

This Propane in Construction Safety Training course has been designed to satisfy regulatory requirements of the most current CAN/CSA-B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code and the CAN/CSA-B149.2 Propane Storage and Handling Code. While this course has been written to satisfy national requirements, the PTI Certified Trainer will also ensure that the participant is aware of any additional requirements as outlined by the authorities in their jurisdiction. This course satisfies national and provincial regulatory requirements including CH-02 ROT requirements in Ontario.

Certification Requirements

Participants must successfully complete both a written and practical hands-on exam. A temporary Record of Training will be issued and is valid for ninety days. The Canadian Propane Association will issue an official paper wall certificate and a plastic wallet card certifying successful completion of the course. Certification is valid for three years from the date of training.

Course Duration and Location

The Propane Safety Training program takes place at either your location or at one of our open public programs and takes approximately 4 hours depending on the size of the group and includes classroom instruction, the demonstration of correct procedures, a written exam and a practical hands-on exam.
Participants are required to wear CSA-certified safety boots and a long-sleeve shirt or alternatively be dressed according to the weather. Gloves and eye protection will be provided. Hard hats and high visibility vests are recommended or are needed as required.
Pre-requisite – WHMIS Complementary – Transportation of Dangerous Goods (if applicable)
